Our goal is to empower you with the resources you need to navigate the transition from student to full-time practitioner successfully. We want to help you alleviate some of the financial burden that comes with student loans.

Today, I wanted to guide you through the process of filling out the teacher loan forgiveness application. I’ve received many questions about this, so I thought it would be helpful to explain it step by step. Don’t worry, it’s not complicated at all! My own experience with the application went smoothly, and I want to assist you in having the same success.

Choosing the Right Forgiveness Program

Now, let’s dive into the forgiveness programs available to you. There are two major programs we’ll focus on today: Teacher Loan Forgiveness (TLF) and Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF). It’s important to choose the program that best suits your specific situation.

Teacher Loan Forgiveness (TLF)

TLF is offered by the Department of Education and provides up to $5,000 to $17,500 in loan forgiveness, depending on your qualification. To be eligible, you must be a highly qualified teacher, teach for five consecutive years in a low-income school, have qualifying loans, and receive authorization from your principal or school district. Completing the required paperwork is crucial to receive forgiveness under this program.

Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF)

PSLF is designed specifically for those working in the public sector. It offers total loan forgiveness on federal student loans after making 120 qualifying payments while working for a qualifying employer. To be eligible, you must have Direct Loans and make payments under a qualifying repayment plan. Certification from your employer is required, and your loan servicer will verify your eligibility for forgiveness.

Choosing the Right Strategy

Determining which forgiveness program to pursue requires considering several factors. Ask yourself the following questions: How much money do you owe? What type of loans do you have? What are your career plans? And what are your financial goals? Understanding your loan balance, loan type, career trajectory, and financial needs will help you make an informed decision.

Revisiting Our Examples

Let’s take two examples to illustrate how different individuals might approach these forgiveness programs. Ally, a science teacher with $17,000 in student loans, would benefit greatly from TLF as she can get most of her balance forgiven after teaching for six years in a low-income school. Josh, on the other hand, has $60,000 in loans and is better suited for PSLF because TLF will not fully cover his remaining balance. These examples show how different profiles require different strategies.
